Understanding washing symbols: The most important laundry symbols simply explained
Laundry labels and symbols often seem like secret language – but they help you care for your clothes properly and keep them looking good for a long time.

🧼 Washing symbols – temperature & care at a glance
The washtub symbol shows you how hot you can wash:
- 30°, 40°, 60°, 90° – that is the maximum temperature.
- A line under the symbol : gentle wash cycle (low spin speed).
- Two lines : Special gentle program – e.g. for wool or silk.
- Crossed out : Do not wash – take to the dry cleaners.

Hand in tub : Hand wash only, max. 30 °C, handle carefully.
🔄 Spin drying – yes or no?
The lines under the washing symbol also apply to spinning:
One line = gentle, two lines = very gentle or no spin at all.
No line? Then normal spin is permitted.
🧺 Ironing – how hot is okay?
The iron symbol tells you the right temperature:
- One point : Iron cold (e.g. for synthetics).
- Two points : Medium temperature (e.g. polyester).
- Three points : Hot setting allowed (e.g. cotton, linen).

The square with a circle stands for machine drying:
- Empty circle : Drum dryers allowed.
